Texture & Pores: The Bumpy Truth 😳

A face with a line down the middle to show before and after good skin care.

Raise your hand if you’ve ever zoomed in on your face and gasped at what looked like a miniature moon crater. (Yeah, me too, especially on my nose.)

Skin texture and visible poresĀ are two of the most common complaints I hear about—right up there with fine lines and breakouts.

And here’s the deal: EveryoneĀ has pores, and everyone has skin texture. But there areĀ things you can do to smooth, refine, and glow it up without sanding your face off.

Let’s break down the causes and the tools that actually help

Why Does My Skin Feel and Look this Way?

A close up of skin with large pores and texture

There are a few reasons your skin might not be as smooth as you’d like:

  • Dead skin buildup – Without regular exfoliation, your skin’s natural cell turnover slows, leading to a dull, rough surface.Ā  (Pro tip:Ā  Dead skin buildup can also make those fine lines and wrinkles more prominent, as dead skin tends to settle in those areas.)

  • Oiliness – Too much oil can clog pores and stretch them out.

  • Genetics – Yep, thanks Mom and Dad.

  • Collagen loss – As we age, we lose that nice, firm scaffolding under the skin, which can make pores look larger.

Let’s Talk Solutions šŸ”¬

Here’s what’s proven to help:

šŸ’§Ā AHAs (Alpha Hydroxy Acids): Glycolic & Lactic Acid

These exfoliate the surface of the skin, dissolving dead cells and revealing the smoother, fresher skin underneath. Bonus? They stimulate collagen over time.Ā  (Note that I said ā€œover timeā€.Ā  Keep using these products long term to see optimum results.) 🧪

Try these:

L'Oreal Revitalift Serum Bottle, red, with 10% glycolic acid and a paragraph about its benefits.

Affordable at around $20. Effective, and gentle enough for most skin types. Cheap, but still good.

A bottle of Dermelect Cosmeceuticals sleep serum nestled in satin

Mid priced at $49, fragrance free (yay!), luxurious yet effective, enhanced with Vitamin C.

Goop dark spot sleep milk and ingredient list

Pricey at $99 but worth it.Ā  The bonus here is that this serum also works wonderfully as a spot treatment for blemishes, and as a quick five-minute treatment mask.Ā  But frankly, at that price, I am leaving it on my face for more than five minutes.Ā  Just sayin’.

Ā

✨ Retinol or Retinaldehyde

Retinol goes deeper, improving skin structure, firming things up, and reducing the look of large pores over time. Retinaldehyde is a gentler cousin, ideal if you're sensitive.

My picks:

Naturium Retinaldehyde Cream serum, front and back of tube

Affordably priced at $32, good for all skin types, and has been shown to improve skin texture.

SkinMedica Retinol, enhances skin tone, texture, and resiliency. Renews skin.

Mid-priced at $96.Ā  Accelerates exfoliation and improves skin texture, and minimizes the irritation that can come with the use of other retinoids.Ā

Obagi Elastiderm Facial Serum promotes firming looking, more resilient facial skin, and supports skin elasticity and targets signs of skin aging

The Cadillac of retinol face serums.Ā  I do not recommend this product if you have dry skin, but rather feel that it works best on normal to oily skin since it is so powerful.

🧓 Niacinamide

This vitamin B3 derivative tightens the appearance of pores, reduces redness, and regulates oil. It’s the Swiss Army knife of skincare.

My go-to's:

White dropper bottle labeled "The Ordinary Niacinamide 10% + Zinc 1%." Minimalist design on a plain white background.

šŸ‘‰Budget Favorite:

Extremely budget friendly at under $10 and works like a charm.

Skincare product image with text detailing a 10% Niacinamide Booster by Paula’s Choice, targeting various skin concerns and suitable for multiple skin types.

This mid-price range serum visibly minimizes pore size, and has other beneficial ingredients to pamper your skin.

Gold oil bottle with text highlighting niacinamide, hibiscus oil, and Abyssinian oil benefits for skin smoothing and barrier strength.

Your luxury niacinamide formulation, hydrating and softening the skin.Ā  Also contains peptides.Ā  This company has been in business for 35 years and it shows.

Your No-Nonsense Pore/Texture Care Routine 🧼

You don’t need a 12-step skincare system—just a smart one.

AM:

  • Cleanse

  • Apply niacinamide serum

  • Moisturize

  • Always finish with SPF 30 or higher

PM:

  • Cleanse

  • 2–3x per week: Apply glycolic or lactic acid serum

  • On other nights: Apply retinol

  • Moisturize

āš ļøĀ Don’t use glycolic and retinol on the same night—alternate them to keep your skin happy, not angry.

AND….Don’t Skip This Part šŸ˜Ž

Sunscreen is mandatory. If you're exfoliating or using retinol, your skin is more sensitive to sun damage. Don't undo your progress by skipping the SPF.Ā  Please.Ā  Trust me.

Try this one:

EltaMD UV Clear SPF 46 sunscreen bottle. White with red and black text. "Dermatologist Recommended" badge. White cream swatch behind.

šŸ‘‰Ā EltaMD UV Clear SPF 46Ā

Lightweight, fragrance-free, and perfect under makeup.Ā  (So, you have no excuse not to use it.)

Real Talk šŸ’¬

Listen, no one’s skin is perfectly smooth and poreless. (Not even that influencer who uses a blur filter in every reel.) The goal isn’t perfection—it’s progress. With the right ingredients and a little consistency, you’ll be glowing smoother than a jazz sax solo in no time.

And as always, if you’re pregnant or breastfeeding, skip the retinol and lean on AHAs and niacinamide instead. Safety first. šŸ‘¶
